About Us

MAKNA (Majlis Kanser Nasional) or National Cancer Council is a not-for-profit mainly tasked to pool and utilise every effort, expertise and welfare from every faction of society to fight cancer and to reduce the pain, suffering and morbidity that cancer patients often experience.

It aims to provide curative care and preventive care, cancer research and support services to cancer patients and their families, high-risk groups and the general public in Malaysia and the region.

Together with ordinary Malaysians from all walks of life, MAKNA hopes to inspire extraordinary change and give people affected by cancer renewed hope in life.

MAKNA is registered under the Registrar of Societies Malaysia on 10 November 1994 and was officially launched on 30 March 1995. It was founded by Dato' Mohd Farid Ariffin in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

What We Do

Over the years, the type of services offered by MAKNA has been diversified to support the nature of different cancer types and the patients' background. The following are some of MAKNA's said services and facilities:

  • MAKNA's Bursary Assistance Programme provides financially-challenged cancer patients with the required support, such as covering cost of treatment, purchasing of medical equipment and ancillary items, etc.
  • Oncology Ward, Stem Cell Transplant Unit and Radiotherapy Treament at Institut Kanser MAKNA-Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (IKM-PPUKM) - the funding and joint-operations of this cancer centre.
  • MAKNA Cancer Research Award (since 2001) – award grants to young researchers for the discovering treatments and cures for cancer.
  • Encouraging, supporting and funding researches conducted by seasoned scientists on cancer which could lead to innovative treatment approaches and potential cancer findings.
  • Organisation of consistent awareness and education programmes nationwide to educate and promote an understanding of cancer and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Provision of mobile breast screening services for early detection of breast cancer to those who are no or little access.
  • Awarding of Young Cancer Survivor Scholarship to qualified young cancer survivors to further their tertiary studies.
  • The Volunteer Community Outreach Programme which is aimed to help cancer patients, raise cancer awareness, and implement many other volunteer-type activities that bring benefits to communities served in all parts of the country.

Your donations will go a long way to finance our projects, help poor cancer patients have a better chance for recovery as well as initiate and maintain the education programmes that are needed for the public to understand the disease better and how to deal with one's own cancer or family members, friends and relatives with cancer.
