Arthritis is affecting many Malaysians, some of whom are young with active lives ahead. Patients with severe arthritis sometimes experience irreparable joint damage resulting in restricted mobility and against their will, require high dependence of family members and loved ones. There is an increase in the number of individuals seeking treatment.
Arthritis Foundation Malaysia (AFM) was formed in 1994 as a non-governmental organization to further the welfare of people living with rheumatic, arthritic and related disorders. AFM has been active in increasing the awareness of arthritis through its many activities. AFM relies on members' contributions and generous donations from the public and corporate bodies.
What We Do
It is our mission to empower people living with arthritis and related diseases to achieve a better quality of life. AFM organizes an array of activities – public forums, events and activities - to create awareness of arthritis. AFM also produces publications to educate the public on arthritis – Joint Efforts (AFM's Newsletter), information leaflets, exercise booklets, etc. AFM has two support groups:
- Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Group for adults suffering from rheumatoid arthritis
- Junior Club for juveniles with arthritis. This Club serves as a social platform for patients' and families' sharing and for patients and caregivers to be educated on how to live with arthritis
AFM has also established an Arthritis Fund. To improve their quality of life, AFM has this Fund to assist the financially challenged patients with the cost of the prosthesis.
How You Can Help
To enable AFM to meet its objectives, AFM relies on the generosity of individuals and corporations for support. Members of the public are encouraged to attend these public forums and activities as it is essential for the public to detect arthritis early and seek the necessary treatment in order not to suffer extreme deformities. Assistance is also required in the form of funding to sustain AFM and for AFM's activities. All donations are tax exempt.
