The present Salvation Army Kuching Children's Home at Jalan Upland was opened in 1958. The Home provides care for children from deprived backgrounds. This includes situations such as poverty, illness, abuse or neglect.
Before admission, referrals are investigated by qualified social workers to ascertain whether it is in the child's best interest to be admitted into residential care.
Once in the Home the children receive a balanced programme of activities: education, health care, social skills development, recreation, counseling and spiritual guidance.
Staff and volunteers cater to the individual child's needs so that each child has a chance to develop their full potential in life.
Currently, the home has a total of 54 residents, aged between four and 18 years old. Many of them are from single-parent families who could not afford to look after them, while some were referred by the Sarawak General Hospital or Welfare Department.
The home can be contacted through its secretary Mdm Liew Yew Foon at 082 248234 or fax 082 248055 or email at kuching_children's_home@SMM.salvationarmy.org.
