A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life.
–Henry Ward Beecher
Every children deserve the opportunity to learn and grow. With a little help, a little hope and someone who believes in them, the dreams of a little child can be made a reality. This is what the children in the rural Orang Asli Village aspire for. To these kids who live in poverty, even the smallest of gift mean the world. Which is why, we wish to inspire them with the blessings of education and literacy, the KEY to unlocking their strength and abilities as well as breaking the poverty cycle that they live in.
The power of education will in turn improve their general livelihood. This is the objective of the "Library of HOPE" program.
Our vision is to build a library from scratch which will enable these children of the Orang Asli village in the outskirts of Perak to receive knowledge and the power of education. The library will be placed specifically in a community hall that serves the people of the village.
Previously in 2016, the Library of Hope was built in Kampung Tidong, Perak with generous support by corporate sponsors such as Manulife Malaysia Berhad, Desa ParkCity & Canon Malaysia in the second quarter of the year as well as in Kampung Bersih, Ulu Slim, Perak in the final quarter of the year with generous corporate support by Steelcase Office Solutions and Publika.
To date, there are 8 Library of Hope in Malaysia, and PeopleGiving is aiming to build the ninth Library in May 2017. Most of the rural villages chosen consisted of an average of 50-60 Orang Asli families with 60 – 70 children between the ages of 4 to 17 years old.
Most of the Orang Asli villages would have several volunteer teachers who travel to the village to teach Sunday classes every week. With the library, these teachers are able to teach more subjects, frequently and the children are able to utilise all the resources in the Library for revision as well as school homework. Apart from the children, the adults in the village also benefitted from the Library through reading classes conducted by the same volunteer teachers at night.
With every Library of Hope program, PeopleGiving aims to fill these libraries with children’s books and toys. More importantly, it will be filled with generous love that will nurture the children with the hope of finding their success in the future.
For this year, PeopleGiving is also aiming to build a small outdoor playground for the much younger children to enjoy apart from the Library. As they say, a healthy body leads to a healthy mind.
Let’s give these children a little help and love, for a little love goes a long way in nurturing great values, fundamental to their upbringing. They are the seeds of today who will, one day, blossom into the flowers of tomorrow!
