For the past 3½ years, 52 year old Norizan Bte Mat Raus @ Manan has been leading a life style of not seeing the daylight.
The loss of her eye sight is the outcome of the years brought about by first diabetes when expecting her youngest child, a son, about 17 years ago.
As a consequence, she was given diabetic prescription which continued after the delivery of her son when hospital authorities confirmed that her diabetes was not a temporary phenomenon associated with pregnancy. She thus continued with her regular diabetic check-ups and medication.
Over the course of the next 7 years, her health condition worsened when at the age of 36 she was found to be suffering from hypertension, resulting therefore in more extensive medical attention and medication. Medical authorities were alerted that her health was heading towards chronic kidney disease (CKD). All they could do was to retard the progress of the CKD to stage 5 where the kidneys fail in their function in purging wastes from the body system and dialysis is required.
Meanwhile, Norizan’s eye sight began to deteriorate and doctors on 6 occasions carried out lasers on both her eyes. Their efforts were in vain, and finally at the age of 48, she succumbed to the world of darkness in 2013 when she was 48 years old.
Around this time, she experienced great discomfort, swellings of her body joints and vomiting. She was admitted to the hospital where blood tests confirmed that she had inevitably succumbed to total kidney failure. Her husband had since stopped working at a factory to take care of her and do the household chores.
Currently, she dialyses at Pusat Dialisis NKF – Dato’ Dr. G.A. Sreenevasan (Petaling Jaya), 4 hours of dialysis treatment, 3 times a week or 13 times a month on average – for life.
Norizan yearns for a life of near normalcy when she prayed for a matching donor kidney to replace her failed organs. She is aware that she will be very lucky indeed to be able to receive it. In the meantime, for her, life goes on and she depends on subsidised dialysis by NKF Malaysia.
Please support our campaign by donating through PeopleGiving. Your donation, no matter how big or small, will help Norizan to cover the cost of dialysis treatments and other medical costs.
