Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed) is collaborating with the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) for the Happy Kidney campaign. The campaign seeks to increase awareness on caring for the kidneys among Malaysians, and also to raise funds to benefit NKF.
Every year, approximately 5,000 new kidney failure patients are diagnosed, and more than half of them are also diabetic, and have high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Through the Happy Kidney campaign, SunMed is driving awareness on caring for our kidneys and general health to reduce the number of cases, and at the same time, raising funds to benefit NKF, so that NKF can help needy patients and also continue their public awareness efforts.
Members of the public are encouraged to donate RM11 and above to obtain a Happy Kidney Challenge pledge card, which contains 30 days of activities that promote good kidney health. All donations from the public will be channelled towards NKF and SunMed will match the amount raised through public donation for their own donation to NKF. SunMed aims to help raise RM93,000 for NKF through the Happy Kidney campaign – RM46,500 from the public and RM46,500 from SunMed in order to subsidise 15,000 dialysis sessions on behalf of NKF. Each dialysis session costs a total of RM152, of which RM62 is subsidised by NKF, RM50 by the Ministry of Health, while RM40 is borne by the patients. All kidney failure patients require dialysis three times a week for life, unless they receive a kidney transplant. NKF is also encouraging the public to pledge to donate their organs.
Welcome to the Happy Kidney donation page.
Every year, the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia spends close to RM15 million subsidising dialysis sessions alone for approximately 1,600 low-income kidney failure patients, while the total operational costs reach RM30 million per year, including running 27 NKF centres nationwide, holding public education programmes, welfare contributions for hardcore poor patients and their children, professional training for personnel, transportation for patients, and replacement of equipment.
In 2015 alone, NKF needs to replace four reverse osmosis water treatment systems costing RM120,000 each, 10 dialysis machines costing RM45,000 each, 20 units of other dialysis-related machines such as dialyser reprocessors or artificial kidney machines costing RM32,000 each.
Please donate generously to help our fellow Malaysians lead a longer and more comfortable life. To encourage more Malaysians to get involved and create more awareness on kidney health, your pledge card will also entitle you to join the Happy Kidney Challenge contest taking place from 13 October to 15 November. Check your pledge card for more details – exciting mystery prizes and a Grand Prize of air tickets worth up to RM5,000 await.
If you have donated RM11 or more – remember to select Other Amounts to donate RM11, you will be receiving an email containing your pledge card with a unique serial number within three days. Please reply to this email and provide your postal address, so that NKF can send you the original receipt for your donation, to allow you to make income tax claims.
